Summer Training Sponsor Spotlight

Nancy Smith Mitchell

What is your hometown? Tempe, AZ

What is your profession? Currently I work as a Senior Research Review Analyst for the UNM school of medicine, but in about 4 weeks I will be a full time student again.

What is your favorite vacation spot? The Oregon coast.

What is your favorite summertime food? Grilled veggie kabobs
What size shoe do you wear? 9.5
Are you a runner? What distance is your favorite? Uncommited runner. I
like half marathons best. Marathons are fun; but really hard on my hips; I can
still get a sense of accomplishment from the half marathon without some of the
pain.
What is your favorite inspirational quote? Not really inspirational, but makes me laugh. From Anchorman: "Veronica and I are trying this new fad called, uh, jogging. I believe it's jogging or yogging. It might be a soft j. I'm not sure but apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It's supposed to be wild!"

My reunion with Katy

The air-conditioning in my complex gym went out this week and won't be fixed until Monday. Since the whole point of me running indoors was to run in a temperature my body could tolerate, I thought this might mean I'd have to take the weekend off running. But this morning I found myself awake at 5am and thought I'd try for an outdoor run and see how far I got. For Dallas summers, most of the time temps before sunrise are actually fairly okay, so today's run was great, although still at a much slower pace than I run in winter/fall temps.

I felt great running for almost 3 miles. I had to really slow down the last 2 only because I've been putting off getting into PT or the chiropractor to get my back lined up again and it's caught up with me this week. But I should be able to get that resolved soon. It felt so great to be back on my Katy Trail this morning-- esp. for a morning run!

Thanks again to my summer sponsors for your support and keeping up my motivation! Not sure if I would have made the 5am wake up call if it wasn't for you. :)

First Sponsored Summer Training Run

Thank you to Nancy Smith Mitchell for sponsoring 50 summer training miles! I earned $2 of Nancy's donation so far with a short treadmill run tonight. Dallas is hot, hot, hot right now--- and I admit I've been a little disappointed having to cut outdoor runs and cut back on miles so much. I'm working on ways to help make my treadmill runs a little more fun this summer. Short ones of just a few miles are just fine, but I'm hoping to get in a few mid-distance (8-12 miles) runs this summer- and that can be a REALLY tough run all on a treadmill by yourself. Knowing I have some miles sponsored to run for this summer is really going to help keep up my motivation to continue with training until the weather cools off and I can join DRC runs again. Thank you again Nancy! Hopefully all of you will get to read more about her soon.

The Couch to 5k group is still doing great with their training, and looking forward to their July 4th goal race. Wednesday's workout was cancelled by the sound of tornado sirens just as we were about to start. That was one ugly storm that came on VERY quickly so we were very fortunate not to get caught in it somewhere around the lake.

National Running Day

June 3rd-- National Running Day
And there's no better group to celebrate with than Dallas Running Club! Here's a
few pictures of the evening's festivities....
The Couch to 5k group got in a great workout tonight, running for their longest time to date--15 minutes.
After the run was a celebration of great people, lots of great food, and happy runners everywhere. What a great holiday!!

I've really been inspired by the enthusiasm and determination of these new runners. If you've ever wondered if running/walking might be something you want to add into your life.... what a better time to make that commitment than the week of National Running Day! And to make your new commitment even more special, think about choosing a goal race and participating as a fundraiser for the Susan Mortensen Turley Foundation. I'd love to add some names to the list of Susan's Foundation Team Members.

And the best news of all today-- I may have found my first summer training sponsor--- more news on that to come!

Happy Holiday!
